Pre-recorded Showing of The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday, May 7 at 8PM ET/PT

Plans for the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards to be broadcast live have been derailed by the Hollywood writers’ strike. Originally scheduled to take place live on May 7th, the event will now air as a pre-recorded special due to the Hollywood writers’ strike. According to reports, the writers intended to picket the live performance at Barker Hanger in Santa Monica.

Jennifer Coolidge

Coolidge is the sixth recipient of the highly prized award, which recognizes actors who have significantly influenced the comedy genre as a whole via their work and made unparalleled contributions to the comedy industry. Including Sacha Baron Cohen (2020), Melissa McCarthy (2016, 2015), Kevin Hart (2015, 2014), and Will Ferrell (2013, 2014), Jack Black joined an amazing list of previous recipients of comic awards last year.

Jennifer Coolidge has been a regular in Hollywood. For her depiction of the affluent, unstable, and unaware fan favorite character “Tanya McQuoid” in HBO’s The White Lotus, Coolidge lately won praise from the critics. She won a Golden Globe, two Critics’ Choice Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, an Emmy in 2022, and other honors for her role. In addition, Coolidge recently co-starred with Naomi Watts in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series The Watcher, with Jennifer Lopez in the romantic comedy Shotgun Wedding, and David Harbour in the family adventure We Have a Ghost.

Known for her frequent collaborations with director Christopher Guest on movies like Best In Show (2000), A Mighty Wind (2003), and For Your Consideration (2006), the actress and comedian is best known for playing “Paulette” opposite Reese Witherspoon in the enduring Legally Blonde franchise. She also made scene-stealing appearances in A Cinderella Story with Hilary Duff and Promising Young Woman with Carey Mulligan.

HOW TO WATCH The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards

By Sabrina Park and Quinci LeGardye / Published: May 6, 2023

The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards is making its way to our screens in the spring to honor the creative prowess and icon status of this year’s most influential entertainers.

For three decades, the awards show has commemorated some of our favorite onscreen highlights (and those who made them happen), including awarding Best Fight to Euphoria‘s Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and Maddy (Alexa Demie), Best Music Documentary to Olivia Rodrigo’s driving home 2 u, and Best Reality Return to Paris Hilton.

Though a live ceremony and red carpet were initially planned, MTV is shifting towards a clip-based show amid the ongoing Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) strike. Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music Talent, Programming and Events at Paramount Global, confirmed to People that the show will no longer be live, and that the pre-show red carpet and talent interviews have been canceled.

“As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peaks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year,” Gillmer said.

This year’s awards show will take place on Sunday, May 7, starting at 8 p.m. ET. Ahead, see everything else to know about the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, including its performers, leading nominees, and presenters.

Who is hosting?

MTV previously announced that Drew Barrymore would host this year’s show, with the talk show host sharing the news via a cute promo video released March 14 from the actress’s “Drew’s News Report” segment on The Drew Barrymore Show

However, Barrymore bowed out of emceeing the program in solidarity with WGA members. The labor union, which represents more than 1,000 entertainment writers who work across film, television, news and digital media, went on strike after the May 1st deadline for a new union contract passed without a ratified film and scripted TV contract.

“I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike,” the actress said in a statement. “Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of [writers’] creation. And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me.”

Barrymore is still expected to appear in several pre-recorded segments during this year’s awards broadcast, and has agreed to return to host the show in 2024.
