Making Home Run History

9/2024
Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani became the first MLB player to ever have 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in the same season today when he crushed a home bomb in the seventh inning of the team’s game against the Miami Marlins, his second round-tripper of the contest, in addition to stealing two bases. Ohtani also surpassed Shawn Green’s club record of 49 home runs to become the Dodgers’ all-time single-season home run leader. Get game tickets on Stubhub, HB magazine’s ticket partner.
50th Theft of the Season
Ohtani’s 50th theft of the season came in the first inning when he took third base (and then added another 51st steal). Subsequently, in the upper half of the sixth inning, he launched a home run to right center field, marking his 49th blast of the season, and achieved an unparalleled feat by hitting a 109.7-mph rocket to left field off pitcher Mike Baumann. Ohtani now has a career-high five hits and seven RBI thanks to the home run. According to MLB.com, he also made history by being the first player since at least 1901 to have at least five hits, multiple home runs, and multiple stolen bases in a single game.
Ohtani Scored a Walk-off Grand Slam on August 23
When Ohtani, 30, scored a walk-off grand slam on August 23 in the Dodgers’ 129th game of the season—his 126th game overall—he became the fastest player in MLB history and the sixth overall to achieve the 40/40 milestone. Prior to that, Ohtani became the third Dodger to accomplish that milestone, after Matt Kemp (2011) and Raul Mondesi (1997, 1999). He joined the 30/30 club on July 30.
Ohtani Set Career Highs in 2021
Ohtani set career highs in 2021 when he earned the first of his two American League Most Valuable Player awards, with 46 home runs and 26 stolen bases as of 2024. Ohtani’s 26 home runs this season through June 30 led the way over his 16 stolen bases, but that’s when he really got hot. Over the course of just 52 games, Ohtani has stolen 28 bases without being caught after getting thrown out on his maiden try following the All-Star Game.
Most Home Runs by a Player Born in Japan
In terms of home runs, Ohtani has already recorded a number of firsts, including his 200th career home run (July 13), most home runs by a player born in Japan (176, April 21), and his first home run as a Dodger (April 3). Ohtani owns seven of the longest home runs by a Dodger this season, with his highest coming on June 18 against Colorado at 476 feet. Ohtani also owns the top five exit velocities among Dodgers home run scorers in the Statcast era, highlighted by a 118.3 mph bomb against Washington on April 23.
Ohtani Had Ten Multi-steal Games in 2024
Ohtani had ten multi-steal games in 2024, including three thefts on August 3 and September 2, and three multi-homer games (also on May 5, June 16). In 2024, Ohtani tied Rickey Henderson’s MLB record by tying 13 times for both base steals and home runs in a single game (1986). He became the sixth player since 1920 to lead MLB in both home runs and thefts in a calendar month with 12 home runs and 15 steals in August. In the history of the Dodgers, Ohtani is the first player to have at least 12 home runs in two months throughout a season.

At the same time, Ohtani surpassed Green’s 2001 total of 49 home runs to become the first player in Dodger history to hit 50 home runs. Before Gil Hodges in 1951 and Mike Piazza in 1997, no Dodger in Brooklyn or Los Angeles had hit 40 home runs in a season. Additionally, no Dodger with 40 home runs ever had more stolen bases than Green’s 20 in 2001.
