Hank Aaron Award

Shohei Ohtani Wins Hank Aaron Award

Ohtani is the first player in Major League Baseball history to win the Hank Aaron Award in both leagues and joins Alex Rodríguez, Barry Bonds, Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, Derek Jeter, Jose Bautista, Miguel Cabrera, Albert Pujols, Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Christian Yelich and Aaron Judge to win the award multiple times.

Edgar Martinez Award

Shohei Ohtani Receives the Edgar Martinez Award for Best Designated Hitter

Ohtani is the first player from the Dodgers to win this award and only the second player in history to win it four years in a row from 2021 to 2024. The only other player to achieve this is Hall of Famer David Ortiz, who won it five times straight from 2003 to 2007.

He is the first player to win the designated hitter award in both leagues and ranks third all-time with four awards, behind Ortiz with eight and Martinez with five.

Silver Slugger Award

Shohei Ohtani, Teoscar Hernández, and Mookie Betts have been honored with the prestigious Louisville Silver Slugger Award

WHAT IS THE LOUISVILLE SLUGGER SILVER SLUGGER AWARD
The Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award is the highest honor for offensive players in Major League Baseball. The winners are chosen through a vote by MLB managers and coaches. They fill out ballots for the players they think are the best at producing offense in each position within their league. Each team gets to vote four times: once from the manager and three times from coaches they select. The votes take into account various offensive stats like on-base percentage (OBP), on-base plus slugging (OPS), OPS+, home runs, hits, runs batted in (RBI), and batting average, along with the managers’ and coaches’ overall thoughts on a player’s offensive skills. An accounting firm called Deming, Malone, Livesay & Ostroff checks the vote counts to make sure everything is accurate.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made history this year by having three players win the 2024 Louisville Slugger Award. Designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, outfielder Teoscar Hernández, and utility player Mookie Betts are the first group of three from the team to achieve this in the same season.

This marks the seventh time the Dodgers have had more than one winner in a single year. Previous pairs include Pedro Guerrero and Fernando Valenzuela in 1981, Kirk Gibson and Tim Leary in 1988, Mike Piazza and Orel Hershiser in 1993, Piazza and Eric Karros in 1995, Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp in 2009, and Betts with Trea Turner in 2022.

Ohtani

Ohtani, at 30 years old, has won his third Silver Slugger award, becoming the first player to hit over 50 home runs and steal over 50 bases in a single season.

He finished the season with a .310 batting average, 54 home runs, 59 stolen bases, and 130 RBIs, setting a Dodgers record with 134 runs scored.

Ohtani led the National League in several categories and was named Player of the Month in September after a stellar performance.

He is now the 25th player to have five career awards and received his fourth All-Star selection, joining six other players with three or more Silver Slugger awards as a designated hitter.

Hernández, 32, has won his third Silver Slugger award, now as a member of the Dodgers, with previous wins in 2020 and 2021.

In his first season with the team, he batted .272 with 33 home runs and 99 RBIs over 154 games, achieving personal bests and ranking sixth in the National League for home runs.

He was selected for his second All-Star Game, hitting 19 home runs and 62 RBIs before the break. Additionally, he made history as the first Dodgers player to win the 2024 T-Mobile Home Run Derby, defeating Bobby Witt Jr. with 49 home runs.

He is one of 28 outfielders with three or more Silver Slugger awards and among 24 players, including Betts and Ohtani, to win the award in both leagues.

Betts

Betts, at 32 years old, won his seventh Silver Slugger award, previously winning in 2016 and 2018-2020, 2022-2024, while playing for the Dodgers with a batting average of .289, 19 home runs, and 75 RBIs.

He also received his first Louisville Silver Slugger award as a utility player, joining 16 players in MLB history with seven or more Silver Slugger awards, including legends like Barry Bonds and Mike Piazza.

Betts now ties with Piazza for the most Silver Slugger awards in Dodgers history with four, having been the 20th Dodger to win the award in 2020, and is one of five players to win multiple Silver Slugger awards in both leagues.

He and Guerrero Sr. are the only players to win the award three or more times in each league. This year, he was named an All-Star for the eighth time, achieving impressive stats of .304/.405/.488 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs in the first half of the season.
