The passing of Al Ferrara is mourned by the Dodgers
“We are saddened to hear the news of Al Ferrara’s passing today,” said Stan Kasten, President & CEO, Los Angeles Dodgers. “Not only was Al a memorable player for the Dodgers in the 1960s, but he tirelessly supported the Dodgers community efforts and was one of our most committed alumni supporters. We extend our sympathies to his family.”
On July 30, 1963, Ferrara made his Major League debut with the Dodgers. He stayed with the team until 1968, hitting.256/.328/.416/.744 (119 OPS+). Ferrara played for two World Series winners (1963, 1965) and three pennant-winning teams (1963, 1965, and 1966) during that span. Ferrara led the Dodgers with a career-high.812 OPS (140 OPS+) and 16 home runs in 1967. Ferrara was chosen as the team’s most valuable player and won the 1967 Dodger of the Year award.
Five Seasons with the Dodgers
Following five seasons with the Dodgers, Ferrara was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 1968 expansion draft after hitting.265/.360/.436/.795 (122 OPS+) over three seasons. Prior to his retirement as a player during the 1971 season, Ferrara played for the Cincinnati Reds.
Ferrara a Dodger Alumni Ambassador
After rejoining the Dodger organization in 2009 as an alumni ambassador, Ferrara continued to serve the community and promote the Dodgers during this year.
Ferrara is survived by his son, Al III, and grandchildren Al IV and Samantha.
