The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Commitment to Preserving Jackie Robinson’s Legacy

During the afternoon of April 15, the Dodgers organization and team members from the Dodgers and the Washington Nationals gathered in front of Jackie Robinson’s statue at the Centerfield Plaza at Dodger Stadium to reflect on Robinson’s historic impact on breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. Also in attendance were Ayo Robinson the granddaughter of Jackie and Rachel Robinson, Dr. Harry Edwards, Sociologist and Civil Rights activist, and the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation/Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars.

Players and coaches wore jerseys with the number 42 on the back in honor of Jackie Robinson.

Once at Robinson’s staute, Nichol Whiteman, CEO for the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation welcomed everyone for a time of reflection and to honor Jackie Robinson.

“Welcome to Dave Martinez and the Nationals. We appreciate you being here. Seventy-seven years ago today Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in the game of baseball and changed the game and life for all of us. We are forever indebted to Jackie and truly happy to be celebrating him today.”

The legacy of Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, continues to inspire and resonate throughout the league and beyond. Each year, on April 15th, all major league players and members of each organization wear the iconic number 42 to honor Robinson’s enduring impact on the game and society.

Dodgers manager, Dave Roberts spoke to all in attendance.

“This is a special day not only in baseball but in all of sports. If you are talking about where eyes are at today, this is the epic center of sports. As we talk with the Dodgers about doing something that’s bigger than ourselves, living a life that’s more important than ourselves, there’s no better person that exemplified that than Jackie Robinson. He had a big burden in his life to be a professional baseball player but to take on all this negativity, this hate towards him, his wife, his kids and still persevere. We appreciate everyone out being here and understanding that we have a privilege, it’s an honor to wear this uniform, our major league uniform that we get to wear. And to help the youth and young kids through the Jackie Robinson Foundation.”

He was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball at that time. His participation was a big step forward in the fight against racial segregation in the sport.
