“Sheila E. is a powerhouse in the music industry. She has had quite an iconic career and has performed with the best!” said Ana Martinez, Producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “We are thrilled to have her join the iconic Walk of Fame as the first female solo percussionist on the Walk of Fame. I cannot think of a better place but to place her star in front of the Musician’s Institute” added Martinez.
Highlight: On July 12, Sheila E., the Queen of Percussion, will receive the 2,759th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In front of the Musician’s Institute at 6752 Hollywood Boulevard, the star will be unveiled. Sheila E. will receive her star in the recording category.
For Sheila E., one of life’s certainties boils down to a single command: follow the beat. The heartbeat of a groundbreaking career that still knows no limitations is her flawless inner rhythm. Sheila E.’s guiding principles as she was growing up in the Bay Area were her family, faith, and music.
The Oakland, California native claims former Santana member and founder of Azteca Coke Escovedo and The Dragons frontman Mario Escovedo as uncles in addition to drummer father Pete. Her godfather was Tito Puente, a fellow Latin superstar. Sheila E. was raised on Latin jazz and Motown in addition to being exposed to a wide variety of Bay Area artists. These inspirations spanned from the funk of Sly & the Family Stone and the R&B/pop of the Pointer Sisters to the rock of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead.
Sheila E. recalls, “I used to sit on the corner outside of the neighborhood community center drinking 7-Up and Twinkies and listening to Sly and Larry Graham practice. “The Bay Area’s sounds shaped me.”
It should come as no surprise that the talented, world-class drummer and percussionist, who was immersed in music as a child, has amassed an impressive list of credits over the years, including performances with her father as well as pioneering artists like George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Prince, Ringo Starr, Gloria Estefan, Beyonce, and Jennifer Lopez.
