When he found out that his number will be retired, Valenzuela said he was surprised. However, after thinking about it, he realized that this was something he had been hoping would happen.
Starting on Thursday, August 10th, the Colorado Rockies will play the Los Angeles Dodgers for the second time this season at Dodger Stadium. Throughout the four-game series against the Rockies, the Dodgers will hold the official retirement ceremony for Fernando Valenzuela’s number 34.
In the history of the Dodgers, Valenzuela will become the 12th player to have his number retired.
The Yaamava Resort and Casino at San Manuel is hosting the “Fernandomania” weekend, a three-day festival honoring the team’s legendary left-handed Cy Young Award winner, World Series champion, and current Spanish radio announcer, Fernando Valenzuela.
On Friday night, his No. 34 will be retired in a special ceremony; the following night, a Valenzuela bobblehead will be distributed; and the following day, a Valenzuela 1981 World Series ring will be given away.
