On March 3, 2025, the WNBA’s Tempo revealed that one of the most renowned athletes in the world, Serena Williams, will be one of the team’s new owners.
Williams and Kilmer Sports Ventures Chairman Larry Tanenbaum become part of the team’s ownership group.
“I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo,” said Serena Williams.
“This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes — I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.”

Williams made her professional debut in Canada
Williams began a career that set records when she made her professional debut in Canada in 1995. She went on to win 73 WTA Tour-level singles titles, including 23 major women’s singles titles, the most in the Open Era.
Teresa Resch, President of the Tempo Basketball Club stated that Serena, the greatest athlete of all time, is set to make an incredible impact on the Tempo Basketball Club and the country, inspiring others to create opportunities and set the bar for women.
Williams will actively contribute to future jersey designs
Williams will help bring the Tempo to life visually as part of her ownership involvement. She will actively contribute to future jersey designs and work with the team to create original retail partnerships.
In 2026, the Tempo will start playing at the Coca-Cola Coliseum. Regular-season games will also be held there across Canada.
