Motivated by the Tastes and Ingredients of Street Food
Street sellers are renowned for adding their own unique flavors to each dish in order to honor tradition and heritage. Taco Bell modified its renowned Chalupa to incorporate components frequently seen in the well-known street taco, drawing inspiration from Latino and Hispanic cultural tastemakers and their distinctive approaches to the taco.
The Cheesy Street Chalupas are the most recent of several enticing variations on the Chalupa since the original emerged in 1999, and they are a tribute to the street taco and street cuisine cultures. Inspired by the legendary Quesalupa shell—one of Chalupa’s most inventive spinoffs—the street-sized, cheese-stuffed Chalupa shells came to life in 2016.
“The Chalupa has taken many delicious forms over the years, but with the Cheesy Street Chalupas, we set out to create a new flavor-rich way for fans to enjoy the beloved menu item,” said Luis Restrepo, Taco Bell’s Vice President, Product Innovation. “The fresh onions and cilantro atop layers of cheese and premium proteins seasoned to perfection adds a different flavor profile and is our playful nod to the street taco that we all know and love.”
Rewarding Entrepreneurs Who Have Inspired Taco Bell
Taco Bell has always been committed to helping the street food vendors who are at the forefront of food culture, as evidenced by the Mexican and other Latin American flavors that have long influenced the company’s menu. With their creativity, commitment, and perseverance, these culinary experts never cease to inspire and have a good influence on their local communities. However, they frequently encounter financial difficulties and regulatory constraints that restrict their capacity to operate a profitable business. As a result, Taco Bell is assisting these entrepreneurs by providing them with fully funded street carts that comply with health permit requirements.
In an effort to support culinary entrepreneurs offering tacos, tamales, burritos, and other items around Southern California, Taco Bell has donated 26 street-legal food carts over the previous two years and plans to provide a total of 46 carts by the end of this summer in collaboration with Revolution Carts. Every Revolution Cart is made to order to aesthetically convey the recipient’s distinct personal and professional style, replete with accessories that are mobile-friendly and umbrellas.
“When it comes to supporting the communities that inspire our food innovation, we’re just getting started,” said Restrepo. “The 46 street-legal food cart donation is the first of a long-term commitment we have to these entrepreneurs; more to come in the years ahead.”
