Sugar-cookies

These cookies are great for soccer fans and a fun way to cheer for the FIFA World Cup. Soccer Ball Sugar Cookies are decorated treats that mix baking with the excitement of the world’s favorite sport.

Yield: 24 cookies | Difficulty: Moderate

PREP TIME: 20 minutes +  COOK TIME: 12 minutes + CHILL TIME: 30 minutes = TOTAL TIME: 62 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks), softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Black and white decorating icing-store bought

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy, about 1 minute.
  3. Add and mix in egg and vanilla.
  4. Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl, then gradually add to the creamed butter and sugar mixture, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Roll out dough and cut into circles.
  6. Place cut-out cookies on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until light brown but not overcooked.
  8. Cool completely and decorate like soccer balls.

TIPS

To keep sugar cookies from spreading when you bake them, use a cookie cutter to cut out the shapes, place them on parchment paper, and then put the cookies in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

This makes the fats firm up and helps the cookies maintain their shape while baking. Plus, the parchment paper on your baking sheet creates a non-stick surface, which helps the cookies retain their shape.

Icing

If you’re short on time, you can quickly decorate your cookies using black and white icing in a creative way to represent soccer.
